NEW: Read the Feb. 23 EMC News report about the show.

    • “To be a person is to have a story to tell”  (Isak Dinesen)

Why stories? … because everyone has a story to tell, and stories are as old as time. Some of the greatest storytellers in history, including many modern-day writers, had a learning disability: Hans Christian Anderson, Stephen Cannell, Jules Verne, George Bernard Shaw, George C Scott, John Irving, Robert Benton, Avi, Terry Goodkind …

    • "A song ain’t nothin’ in the world but a story just wrote with music to it." —Hank Williams, Sr.

Individuals with LD are found across all walks of life, including famous figures  such as Leonardo da Vinci, Auguste Rodin, Winston Churchill, Thomas Edison, Charles Schwab, Tommy Hilfiger, Henry Ford, Dwight Eisenhower, Alexander Graham Bell, Nolan Ryan, John F Kennedy, Keira Knightly, “Magic” Johnson, Albert Einstein, Jewel, John Lennon, Terry Bradshaw.

We also know that when undiagnosed or untreated, people with Learning Disabilities are over-represented in our prison systems, juvenile detention centres, and living below the poverty line.

An estimated 5 - 10% of the population has a Learning Disability that affects the way they read or write or do math. In school, these children struggle to keep up with classmates even though they are smart and hard working. LDAK is a community resource that provides resource support and advocacy for individuals living with LD, their families and professionals with whom they work. The organization is funded through membership dues, donations, and community fundraising efforts.

The vision of the LDAK involves an informed, committed Greater Kingston Area in which individuals with Learning Disabilities are provided with the same opportunities to contribute as their neighbours, co-workers, classmates, and relatives.  We welcome your support in joining us as we present A Celebration of Storytelling and Song.

Charly Chiarelli will be the dynamic emcee. Other storytellers include:

    • Liz Buchanan: Queen's Education student, drama enthusiast and storyteller,

    • David Hurley: renowned lawyer, actor and musician,

    • Vicki Keith: Order of Canada, well known marathon swimmer and motivational speaker.
